Nighttime Skincare Regimen for All Skin Types

Skincare Regimen

Medically reviewed by Dr. Unsa Mohsin.

Putting together a skincare regimen is not an easy task. Especially if you want one that is tailored to your skin type and preferences. But until you figure out what your skin type is and what products you need to use for your particular skin issues you can follow a basic skincare routine. One that is sure to benefit your skin regardless of its type. The next step would be to apply all your skin products in their correct sequence. Most of us have drawers full of skincare items that we slap on whenever it’s convenient for us. However, if our skincare products are not applied in their correct order, chances are they will not be absorbed by the skin at all. So ensure that you have a basic, sequenced nighttime skincare routine that you can follow before going to bed. If followed regularly, this skincare regimen is bound to do wonders for your skin!

Step-by-Step Basic Nighttime Skincare Guide

Step 1: Make up removal

The first step to any good skin care routine is to ensure your skin is clean from any makeup, dirt or grime. If you skip this step, chances are that the trapped dirt and make up will cause you to break out. This is why it is important to always take your makeup off with a good water, or oil based makeup remover. Micellar water is a popular, light and non-irritating product you can use for this. If you want to follow the double cleanse method, it is recommended to use an oil based cleanser.

Step 2: Exfoliation (optional)

Exfoliating everyday is very damaging for your skin. However, you can use a light exfoliant once or twice a week to improve blood circulation and rejuvenate your skin. Exfoliation should also be avoided if you’re using certain treatments such as retinoids, or a serum containing peeling solutions such as AHA/BHA (mild chemical exfoliants).

Step 3: Cleanser

Next use a mild cleanser to remove any residual dirt or make up from your face. Using harsh cleansers can dry your skin out. This is why you should always opt for a mild and gentle cleanser.

Step 4: Toner

Contrary to popular belief, toners are not meant to remove make up or dirt. Instead they refresh and hydrate your skin, preserving its natural oils. Use a good toner following your cleanser to ensure your skin remains supple and hydrated.

Step 5: Treatments and Serums

This is the fun part of your routine. If you have any medicated treatments, serums or other targeted solutions, now is the time to use them. It is not necessary to use specialised treatments, however, they can be beneficial for select skin issues.

Step 6: Eye Cream

The area under your eye is especially thin and prone to fatigue and dryness. This is why it requires a little extra tender love and care. Use a good quality eye cream to ensure your under eye area remains hydrated as well.

Step 7: Moisturizer

The final step to your skin care treatment is a good moisturizer. If you have acne prone skin, use a light water based moisturiser and for dry skin use thicker oil based ones. However, using a light-weight moisturizer that suits all skin types is ideal.

Conclusion

End your day with a well-sequenced night time routine to ensure your skin is well equipped as it repairs itself during the night. By following a religious nighttime skincare regimen, you will notice your skin becoming clearer, fresher and more supple skin in no time!
