Primary Uses

Indications

This medicine is used in the treatment of hyperphosphatemia (elevated level of phosphate in blood) in hemodialysis (filtration of blood by a machine that acts like an artificial kidney).

Side Effects

Patients administered with this medicine may experience gastrointestinal upset, and very rarely intestinal obstruction, intestinal perforation (pierced with a hole), diverticulosis (presence of multiple pouches in colon that are not inflamed), pruritus (urge to scratch), and rash (change in color and texture of skin).

Contraindications

This medicine is contraindicated in patients suffering from bowel obstruction and hypophosphatemia (low phosphate level in blood).
