Sitagliptin is an oral anti-hyperglycemic medicine that belongs to the class of DPP-4 inhibitors. It is used to manage type II diabetes mellitus in adjunct to lifestyle changes. Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by abnormally high levels of glucose in your blood. Type II diabetes is the most common form of diabetes where cells become resistant to insulin, leading to increased blood sugar. Sitagliptin increases the production of insulin and decreases the production of glucose.

  • Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water.
  • Take this medicine with or without food, preferably with food.

Primary Uses

Type II diabetes

Indications

Monotherapy: This medicine is used for treating type 2 diabetes (condition characterized by elevated glucose levels) that is inadequately controlled by metformin, diet and exercise.

Dual therapy: It is used for treating diabetes type 2 along with metformin or a glitazone when patients respond inadequately to diet changes, exercise and either metformin or glitazine, or in combination with sulphonylureas in patients contraindicated for metformin, and for patients that do not respond adequately to sulphonylureas alone.

Triple therapy: This medicine is used with metformin and a sulphonylureas or glitazone for treating diabetes 2 that is inadequately controlled by dual therapy.

With insulin: This medicine is used with or without metformin for treating type 2 diabetes in patients who respond inadequately to diet, exercise, and insulin.

Side Effects

The patients administered with this medicine may experience pancreatitis (inflammation of pancreas), allergic reactions, Stevens-Jhonson Syndrome (allergic reaction), Hypoglycemia (low glucose levels), bullous pemphigoid (large fluid-filled blisters), osteoarthritis (weak bones), upper respiratory tract infections, flatulence, swelling, and influenza (flu-like symptoms).

Can this medicine cause low blood sugar?

This is a possible side effect, but can be avoided if meals are taken regularly. Try to carry sugar or a sugary drink in case you experience lightheadedness, or any other symptoms of low blood sugar. Take extra precautions during times of stress, or dehydration (fever, diarrhea etc.)

What do I do if I miss a dose?

You can take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If you remember when it is almost time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose entirely. Do not double your dose to catch up for missed doses.

What will happen if I skip a meal?

If you are not regular with your meals, you may experience symptoms of low blood sugar: Such as palpitation, sweating, dizziness, light headedness etc. In this case, taking sugar can relieve your symptoms.

Will this medicine make me gain or lose weight?

Weight gain is less likely with this drug.

Can this medicine cause disturbances in sleeping patterns, or stomach problems?

It is possible for patients to feel sleepy while taking this drug, and constipation is also a possible side effect.
