Millions of people around the globe take on the pink ribbon in hopes of raising both funds and awareness for this breast cancer issue. Breast cancer has been growing steadily in Pakistan with thousands of patients each year being affected. What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that can grow into (invade) surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body. The disease occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get it, too.

What are the risk factors of breast cancer?

There are a few instances of factors that are within one’s reach to prevent breast cancer while others are within one’s reach. According to one research, women who smoke are twice as exposed to the risk of developing breast cancer as those who don’t. Another important factor is your lifestyle. If you are way past beyond your young days and are worried that the ship has already sailed, you need not to worry anymore. Research suggests that physical activity even in the later part of life reduced breast cancer risk by 10 percent to 30 percent. A moderate 30-minute walk each day will suffice

How do I detect breast cancer?

You can perform a breast exam at home by feeling for any lumps or spots.  As soon as you discover any unusual lump or spot, you should talk to your physician or better yet, a cancer specialist right away.
