A lot of people we know complain of headaches during Ramadan. Headaches can be a pain especially when they interfere with our daily activities. There can be several reasons or triggers for headaches during Ramadan but can be managed with a proper diet and enough sleep. Our brain automatically detects when water levels are low and it produces histamines. Histamine in simpler terms causes low energy and pain. That’s why it is advised to drink lots of water during Sehri and after the breaking the fast. It is also going to be extremely hot in Ramadan so it is best advised to hydrate yourself enough and stay indoors – All this will lower the chances of getting headaches during Ramadan.
Caffeine withdrawal Ramadan is one of the most common causes of headaches during fasting especially if you’re used to drinking lots of coffee everyday. You can start by reducing Ramadan caffeine intake beforehand and during Ramadan have a strong cup of coffee at the time of Sehri and then at Iftar and if it still doesn’t suffice have a painkiller as suggested by your doctor.
Many also suffer from headaches because of Hypoglycemia (Low blood sugar). Headaches associated with Hypoglycemia start out mild and get worse with time. When we are fasting, our body is unable to take in sufficient amounts of glucose to maintain proper levels. For this try to take proper diet. Make sure it’s not just carbs. Do not overeat and minimize eating sweet. Have proper meals which contain combined fiber, protein and healthy carbohydrates. Normal levels of physical activity also helps but make sure it isn’t excessive.
One of the primary causes of headaches during Ramadan is because of disturbed sleep patterns or lack of sleep. Many of us tend to sleep only after Sehri and let’s not deny how we all are on either phones or laptops which not only increases our screen time but also disturbs our sleep pattern. Waking up late doesn’t compensate for the loss of sleep. It’s better to sleep on time and get enough sleep. Not only will it help you stay active throughout Ramadan but there will be less chances of getting headaches because of lack of sleep.
