Allergic rhinitis

Description

Allergic rhinitis (irritation and inflammation of mucous membrane inside the nose) is an allergic reaction that occurs on the inhalation of allergens present in air such as pollen, dust, animal dander, and fungal spores or on administration of food items or medicines that a person is allergic to.

Causes

Some major causes of allergic rhinitis (irritation and inflammation of mucous membrane inside the nose) include: breathing in allergens present in air such as dust mites, animal skin, saliva, pollen and spores. Allergic rhinitis (irritation and inflammation of mucous membrane inside the nose) is triggered in some people due to the allergens present in their work environment such as wood dust, flour dust, or latex. Allergic rhinitis (irritation and inflammation of mucous membrane inside the nose) is also activated on eating food items that a person is generally allergic to such as mushrooms, cheese, or chocolate.

Risk factors

People that are suffering from asthma (swelling and narrowing of airways), eczema (red and itchy skin), common cold, and people that are exposed to an environment that is full of allergens at an early age such as, a child growing up in a household where everyone smokes,  are at a greater risk of developing allergies.

Symptoms

Some distinguishable symptoms of allergic rhinitis (irritation and inflammation of mucous membrane inside nose) include: runny and stuffy nose, sneezing, rhinorrhea (excess nasal secretion), itching, swelling and erythema (redness) of conjunctiva, teary eyes, and itching in the throat.

Diagnosis

To formulate a diagnosis, your physician will ask you about your symptoms, your medical history, your family’s medical history, and will require knowledge about factors that trigger your allergic rhinitis (irritation and inflammation of mucous membrane inside the nose) such as time of the year when it occurs, during which season is it exacerbated, at what time of the day is it more severe, on eating what food items is it aggravated, or if any medicines that you take on a daily basis or occasionally trigger it.

Management

First line of treatment for allergic rhinitis (irritation and inflammation of the mucous membrane inside the nose) include avoid going to places that trigger your allergies, use a face mask when going out during a season that exacerbates your allergies, and use a nasal spray if your symptoms persist for longer than a week. If the first line of treatment is not successful in providing you relief then your doctor will recommend you to start taking antihistamines, nasal decongestants, cromolyn, and intranasal corticosteroids.

When to consult a doctor?

You are recommended to consult a doctor if your symptoms persist or worsen, if you start experiencing new symptoms on administration of medicines, or if you have a general feeling of illness and discomfort.
