Bone Cancer

Description

This cancer can begin in any bone in the body, usually affecting the pelvis or the long bones in the legs and arms. Bone cancer is very rare. As the name suggests bone cancer forms in the cells of the bone. 

Causes

The cause of most bone cancers is unknown. It can be linked to radiation factors as well as can be hereditary. 

Risk factors
  • Paget’s disease of bone : This can increase the risk of developing bone cancer later.
  • Inherited Genetic syndrome 
  • Radiation therapy of cancer : Exposure to radiation (large doses) increases the risk of developing bone cancer later.
Symptoms

Sign and symptoms of bone cancer include:

  • Swelling near the affected area
  • Bone pain
  • Fatigue ‘
  • Weakened bone 
  • Weight loss (unintended)
Diagnosis

Imaging tests are done to determine the location of bone tumors and its spread. Tests may include : 

  • Computed tomography
  • Bone scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • X-ray 
  • Positron emission tomography
Management

Surgery is the usual treatment for bone cancer. Some kinds of bone cancers can also be treated with chemotherapy.
