Chronic Heart failure
Description
Chronic Heart failure, which is characterized by Congestive Heart failure or heart failure. It is an inability of the heart to pump sufficient amounts of blood through the body to ensure enough supply of oxygen. The term “heart failure” does not mean the heart is failing completely or has stopped, but it is weaker than normal (in a healthy person). In a few cases, the condition can be mild in which symptoms may be noticeable when exercising. While in some conditions it may be more severe, causing symptoms that may be life threatening. It is a long term condition that worsens gradually over time. It can’t be completely cured but can be managed.
Causes
Chronic Heart failure is a complication of many other conditions. It has no single cause.
One of the leading causes is coronary artery disease.
Symptoms
The symptom of left-sided chronic heart failure is shortness of breath, when lying flat. Cough is sometimes present. The symptom of the right side is edema (buildup of fluid causing swelling of the legs and ankles).
Other common symptoms include:
- Dizziness
- Tiredness
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Loss of appetite
- Rapid heart beat
- Angina or chest pain
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on a patient’s medical history. Various tests are done by doctors to identify the underlying cause of CHF which are as follows:
Electrocardiogram (ECG)
Echocardiogram (ultrasound)
Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP)
Chest X-ray
Management
Dietary and lifestyle changes helps in the management of Chronic Heart failure:
- Stop smoking
- Lose weight
- Limit alcohol intake
- Exercise regularly
- By limiting salt intake

Consult your doctor if your condition persists or worsens, if you experience symptoms of heart attack and stroke, headaches, epistaxis (nose bleed), dizziness (lightheadedness), or fatigue.
