Cold

Description

Cold is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract including nose, throat and pharynx. It is a symptom of various viral infections and it may resemble flu, but symptoms of flu are more severe than cold.

It can affect both young and adult, but children under age of 6 are most affected by cold.

Causes

Cold can be caused by various viruses but the most common virus that causes cold is rhinovirus which can be transferred from person to person or surface to person and enters the body through eyes, nose or mouth. 

Risk factors

Risk factors of cold include following:

  • Immunocompromised,
  • Environment,
  • Season,
  • Smoking
Symptoms

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s include:

  • Sneezing,
  • Malaise,
  • Loss of smell,
  • Watery eyes,
  • Headache,

  • Low grade fever etc.
Diagnosis

The diagnosis is done on the basis of signs and symptoms and to further exclude other causes a chest X-ray is performed.

Management

It’s management includes the following:

  • Medications:
    • painkillers,
    • decongestant nasal sprays,
    • cough syrup
  • Preventive measures:
    • Wash hands often,
    • Avoid sick people,
    • Cover your mouth while coughing
  • Home remedies:
    • Eat chicken soup,
    • Drink plenty of water,
    • Salt water gargles,
    • Eat yoghurt,
    • Take rest etc.
When to consult a doctor?

Consult your doctor if the fever is higher than 103.4 F, lasts for more than 5 days, breathlessness, worsening of symptoms, severe throat pain etc occurs in adults.

In children if the fever is higher than 100.4 F, return after fever free period, headache, excessive drowsiness, ear pain, wheezing etc occurs then consult your doctor immediately
