Crohn's Disease

Description

Crohn’s disease is a lifelong chronic inflammatory disorder of the GI tract. It can occur in any part of the tract, but mostly the small intestine and colon are affected. Its severity varies from mild to enervating and sometimes may lead to life threatening conditions. The definite reason is still unknown, but it may be due to the hyperactive reaction of the immune system. 

Causes

Exact cause of crohn’s disease is not known, it may be associated to couple of factors:

  • Environmental factors,
  • Genetic factors,
  • Immune system
Risk factors

Risk factors include:

  • Family tendency: This disease tends to run in the family. If a close family member has it, you are at a greater risk.
  • Smoking may also increase the risk of developing this disease
  • An Eastern European Jewish background may also increase the risk.
Symptoms

Symptoms of crohn’s disease develop over a period of time. It includes the following:

  • GI disturbance,
  • Diarrhea,
  • nausea
  • Fever,
  • Weight loss,
  • Tiredness,
  • Blood in stool,
  • Mucus in stool,
  • Abdominal cramps etc.
Diagnosis

A diagnosis can be made using physical examination, and the following tests:

  • Barium Tests and X-Rays
  • Stool sample and analysis
  • Colonoscopy
  • CT scan, MRI
  • A biopsy may be taken in some cases.
Management

There is no permanent cure of crohn's disease. Symptomatic treatment is done to alleviate them. Its management include the following:

  • Making lifestyle changes - like avoiding food that might worsen the symptoms such which includes fats, sugar, spices, lactose etc.
  • Medications which include following:
  1. Corticosteroids
  2. Antidiarrheal
  3. Anti inflammatory
  4. Antibiotics
  5. immunomodulators
  • Surgery
When to consult a doctor?
  • Bloody stools,
  • Fever,
  • Persistent diarrhea that is not responding to antidiarrheals,
  • Severe continuous abdominal pain etc.
