Deep Vein Thrombosis

Description

The formation of a blood clot in deeper veins usually in the leg is called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It can be life-threatening if the clot travels to other body parts blocking blood flow. If the clot travels to the lungs and causes blockage it is called pulmonary embolism. When DVT and pulmonary embolism occur side by side it is known as a thromboembolism.

 

Causes

Causes of deep vein thrombosis include:

  • Injury,
  • Inflammation due to infection,
  • Trauma during surgery,
  • Immobility or inactivity, such as bedridden patients etc.
Risk factors

Risk factors of DVT include the following:

Symptoms

Symptoms of DVT are:

  • Pain,
  • Swelling in the affected area,

  • Shoulder pain,
  • Neck pain,
  • The skin of the affected area feels warm etc

 

Diagnosis

Firstly, the doctor will take the detailed history of symptoms and examine you physically looking for swelling, pain and other visible changes in the affected area. For definite diagnosis doctor will run certain important medical tests such as:

  • Ultrasound,
  • Venogram,
  • MRI,
  • D-dimer test etc.
Management

Management of DVT include the following:

  • Blood thinners; warfarin, heparin etc.
  • Thrombolytic medicines; for serious condition.

  • Surgery etc.
