Duodenal ulcers
Description
A Duodenal Ulcer, also known as Peptic Ulcer, is an inflamed open sore on the inner lining of the intestine. It mostly develops in the first part of the small intestine, the duodenum.
Causes
Following are the causes:
- An infection, such as by Helicobacter Pylori
- Regular or uncontrolled use of certain pain relievers, such as Aspirin
- Other medications, such as steroids, anticoagulants, Fosamex, Actonel, etc.
Risk factors
The following are the risk factors:
- Alcohol abuse
- Active or history of radiation therapy, such as X-rays
- Frequent consumption of spicy foods
- Helicobacter Pylori infection
- Regular use of certain medicines, such as Aspirin and Ibuprofen
- Stress
- Severe illness
- Tobacco use
Symptoms
The following are the symptoms:
- Burning or excessive abdominal pain
- Intolerance or difficulty consuming fatty foods
- Intolerance or difficulty consuming spicy foods
- Heartburn
- Nausea and vomiting
- Dark colored stools, such as black or tarry
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue
- Appetite changes
Diagnosis
For diagnosis, your doctor may inquire about your eating habits, health history, medicinal history, symptoms, and perform an Endoscopy, which involves examining the intestinal tract with a camera. Moreover, you may be required to test for Helicobacter Pylori infection.
Management
Following is the management:
- Stoppage of use of ulcer promoting medicines
- Avoid consuming spicy foods
- Cautious use of pain relievers
- Regular use of medicines prescribed by doctor

If your symptoms do not improve within 7-10 days, or you experience any of the following, please see a doctor:
- Intense burning abdominal pain
- Return of abdominal pain after temporary relief by medicines
- Nausea and vomiting
- Heart burn
