Enlarged prostate glands

Description

Prostate is a small gland surrounding urethra in males that produces sperm containing fluid at the time of ejaculation. Multiplication of prostate cells causes the enlargement of this gland, which is very common in men as they get older, enlargement of prostate is not cancer neither it can predispose it to prostate cancer, but it does affect the quality of life. It is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Causes

Uncontrolled growth of prostate cells causes the gland to enlarge, which may be due to sex hormone imbalance with age.

Risk factors

Risk factors of enlarged prostate include the following:

  • Age,
  • Family history,
  • Sex hormone imbalance,
  • Obesity,
  • Diabetes,
  • Heart disease etc.
Symptoms
  • Painful urination,
  • Incomplete emptying of bladder,
  • Nocturia (waking up during the night to urinate) 
  • Dribbling at the end of urination,
  • A sudden need to urinate etc.
Diagnosis

Firstly, the doctor will take the detailed history of the complaint and symptoms, then physically examine the patient including rectal examination for analyzing the shape of the prostate gland. Furthermore, to reach the definite diagnosis doctor will perform the following tests:

  • Urinalysis,
  • Prostatic biopsy,
  • Urodynamic test,
  • Prostate specific antigen,
  • Post void residual,
  • Cystoscopy,
  • Intravenous pyelography or urography.
Management

Treatment of  enlarged prostate glands depends upon the age and condition of the patient. Its management include:

  • Lifestyle changes: avoid alcohol, caffeine, reduce stress, keep yourself warm, urinate as soon as you feel the urge to urinate.
  • Medications:
    • Alpha blockers: tamsulosin, prazosin, alfuzosin etc,
    • 5 alpha reductase inhibitor
    • Anti biotics
  • Surgery.
