Female Infertility

Description

Female infertility is described as trouble or failure in getting pregnant after one year of frequent sexual intercourse. Six months of frequent intercourse and no success in getting pregnant are sufficient to declare infertility in women above 35 years of age. Continued miscarriages are also described as infertility.

Causes

Known causes of female infertility are:

  • Prolonged menstrual cycle that lasts for longer than 35 days,
  • Inability to get pregnant,
  • Having a menstrual cycle that is less than 21 days.
Diagnosis

To reach a diagnosis, your doctor will take your thorough medical and menstrual history, will ask questions about any symptoms that you might be experiencing, and will recommend you to get a few laboratory investigations like ultrasound, blood tests, and endometrial biopsy done.

Management

If the cause behind infertility is hormonal imbalance or problems in ovulation, then the condition is managed with the help of medicines such as gonadotropins. If the cause is any structural abnormality, then the recommended option is to get a reconstructive surgery done or look for other options like IVF to get pregnant.

When to consult a doctor?

You should consult a doctor if you are under 35 years of age and have been trying to conceive for the last one year and haven’t succeeded, if you have been trying to conceive for the last six months and you are between 35 and 40 years of age, your condition is causing you emotional and psychological distress, or if you are above 40 years of age.
