Fibrocystic breast disease
Description
It is a non-cancerous change that makes breasts fibrous (growth of connective tissue) and cystic (fluid filled cavities), the breasts become lumpy in this condition and may give a feeling of discomfort. Fibrocystic breast is very common in women, it’s a non-dangerous condition and usually symptomless in most of the women.
Causes
Definite cause is still unknown, but it is believed that these benign changes are due to alteration of progesterone and estrogen levels and are usually associated with menstrual cycle, pregnancy or lactation.
Risk factors
Fibrocystic change likely to occur in following:
- Women on hormonal therapy,
- Women of child bearing age,
- Overweight,
- Menopausal women etc.
Symptoms
Symptoms of fibrocystic breasts includes:
- Swelling,
- Tenderness,
- Lumpiness,
- Increase in lumpiness or tenderness before periods etc.
Diagnosis
The lump is examined during a physical examination, for better imaging ultrasound, MRI and mammogram is ordered by the doctor. If the lump feels cystic the doctor performs fine needle aspiration to remove fluid from it. As fibrocystic breasts make it difficult to identify whether the lump is cancerous or not a biopsy is performed in order to examine it further and to reach the definite diagnosis.
Management
Only symptomatic treatment is done to relieve the symptoms. Management of fibrocystic breast includes:
- Medicines:
- Painkillers e.g. acetaminophen, ibuprofen etc
- Lifestyle changes:
- Reduce diet with high salt content, fat and also reduce intake of caffeine.
- Wearing supporting bra
- Puncturing of cyst using fine needle aspiration technique
When to consult a doctor?
Consult your doctor if you experience any unusual lump, redness or indentation on breasts and discharge from nipples.
