Heart Failure

Description

Heart Failure, also known as Congestive Heart Failure, is characterized by reduced efficiency of the heart muscle to pump blood around the body. It can occur due to a wide variety of reasons; some common causes include Coronary Artery Disease (narrowing of the vessels supplying the heart) and Hypertension (high blood pressure). Such conditions gradually decrease the heart’s ability to effectively pump blood. Mild cases can be treated with medicines while severe cases may require surgery.

Causes

Following are the causes:

  • Cardiomyopathy, abnormal conditions of the heart leading to impaired heart function
  • Congenital heart defects, heart abnormality by birth
  • Heart valve disease
  • Arrhythmias, abnormal heartbeat, and heart dysfunction
  • Emphysema, lung disease
  • Diabetes elevated blood glucose levels
  • Thyroid gland disorders
  • Severe anemia, causing low blood cell count
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Cancer or chemotherapy
Risk factors

The following are the risk factors:

  • Obesity
  • Diabetes elevated blood glucose levels
  • Excessive consumption of fatty foods
  • Atherosclerosis, narrowing of the vessels
  • Unhealthy lifestyle
  • Smoking
  • Stress
  • Pancreatitis (pancreas infection)
  • Elderly
Symptoms

The following are the symptoms:

  • Dyspnea, shortness of breath
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Swelling in the legs, ankles, and feet
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Wheezing or persistent cough
  • Increased urination at night
  • Weight gain due to swelling
  • Lack of appetite
  • Decreased alertness
  • Feeling of suffocation
  • A sudden severe attack of coughing
  • Chest pain

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of heart failure is made along the lines of the presence of risk factors, symptoms and by conducting some tests. Your doctor may ask you to get the following tests done:

  • Chest X-ray: This X-ray helps a doctor see if the lungs or the heart has enlarged, so that other conditions that may cause the same signs and symptoms can be ruled out.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG): This is a test through which the electrical activity of the heart is recorded. In this way, the doctor is able to diagnose any heart rhythm problems and damage to the heart.
  • Stress tests: Certain tests are conducted by the doctors to check the activity of the heart under exertion. This is done by asking the patient to do several activities that may put exertion on the heart muscle.
  • Cardiac Computerized Tomography scan: A cardiac CT scan is performed by making the patient lie in a doughnut like machine and an X-ray tube is rotated around the body which collects the images of the heart and the chest.
  • Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging: This method involves the use of magnetic rays which create a magnetic field inside the machine. Radio waves are broadcasted towards these magnetic particles that create images of the heart. It is done by making the patient lie in a tube like machine.
Management

Following is the management:

  • Regular and directed use of prescribed medicines
  • Light to mild exercise
  • Cessation of smoking
  • Avoidance of alcohol
  • Removal or minimal use of sodium
  • Reduction in cholesterol levels
  • Healthy lifestyle

Please consult your doctor for further information.

When to consult a doctor?

Early diagnosis can lead to effective and successful treatment. If your symptoms do not improve within 10 days, or you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above such as chest pain, fainting, weakness, or breathlessness, please see a doctor immediately.
