Hodgkin's Lymphoma

Description

Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is a cancerous condition in which cancer originates from the body’s white blood cells, particularly the lymphocytes. During the course of the disease, there may be non-tender swollen lymph nodes in the neck, along or under the arms, or in the groin area.

Causes

The exact cause for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is unknown. However, according to research, it occurs due to a change (mutation) in the DNA, specifically in the B lymphocytes (white blood cells). The mutated cells grow and multiply rapidly unless treated.

Risk factors

The following are the risk factors:

  • Genetic or family history
  • Frequent exposure to radiation
  • Frequent exposure to carcinogens
  • Weak immune system
  • Epstein Barr Virus (infectious virus)
  • Human-Immunodeficiency Virus
  • Age (increased occurrence in the individuals in their 20s or above 55 years of age)
Symptoms

The following are the symptoms:

  • Painless swelled lymph nodes
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Night sweats
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fever
  • Severe itching
  • Appetite changes
  • Increased sensitivity to alcohol

 

Diagnosis

The diagnosis is made when a doctor examines the patient physically, checks relevant symptoms, and performs certain lab tests, such as biopsy, imaging tests, and blood tests.

Management

Following is the management:

  • Regular and directed use of prescribed medicines
  • Radiation therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Steroids
