Insomnia refers to difficulty in falling asleep, or maintaining it. It may also present as waking up early, or feeling exhausted after waking up in the morning.

Insomnia may occur for any of the following reasons:

  • A Stressful lifestyle, or dealing with a stressful event such as the loss of a loved one, divorce, or moving to a new place
  • Travelling and associated jet lag, or difficult working hours.
  • Medications for depression, asthma, or allergies.
  • Physical pain due to any illness.
Risk factors

The following factors may increase the risk of developing insomnia:

  • Excess caffeine, alcohol, or nicotine intake can interfere with sleeping.
  • Using phones or laptops for a long period of time before bed may lead to trouble sleeping.
  • Sleeping too much in the day may also make it harder to sleep at night.
  • Lack of a proper routine.
  • Worrying, or taking too much stress.

Symptoms include:

  • Staying awake at night, or waking up frequently.
  • Feeling extremely tired, and sleepy throughout the day.
  • Irritability and difficulty concentrating.

A diagnosis can usually be made based on the history of your symptoms. You may be asked to keep a better record of how much you sleep to get a better idea of your symptoms.

Insomnia that is mild, or moderate does not require much treatment. Simply developing a proper routine, and exercising regularly can help improve symptom if they are mild. However, if it gets difficult for you to carry out your daily activities, sleeping pills may be prescribed by your doctor. It is best to use medicine that has been prescribed, instead of over the counter medication. These medicines should only be taken for the time recommended, and only in the dosage prescribed by your doctor.

When to consult a doctor?

A doctor should be consulted if:

  • You cannot sleep even after taking the prescribed medication.
  • The medicine you were taking is no longer effective (making any adjustments in the dosage of the prescribed drug should be avoided).
