Lice

Description

Lice are tiny parasitic insects that feed on human blood. Lice spread easily by school children, basically close contact and by sharing personal belongings. 

There are 3 kinds of lice.. 

  • Head lice - They are found on the scalp. 
  • Body lice - These are found in clothing and on bedding and eventually move onto skin to feed. 
  • Pubic lice - They appear on the skin and hair of the pubic area. Less frequently on eyebrows or eyelashes. 

People with good hygiene also end up getting lice.

Causes

Lice don’t jump or fly they spread through 

  • Head to head or body contact 
  • Sharing personal belongings with someone with lice
  • Contact with contaminated furniture
  • Sexual contact
Risk factors
  • Using infested brushes, combs or towels 
  • Lying in a bed, carpet, couch of an infected person
  • Wearing clothing such as caps, hats, hair accessories worn by infected person
Symptoms

Common signs and symptoms include 

  • Intense itching
  • Tickling 
  • Lice eggs
  • Sores on the scalp 
  • Bite marks
