Lichen Planus

Description

Lichen Planus is an inflammatory skin condition; it causes the formation of itchy, non-infectious rashes on the arms and legs. The characteristic bumps have a small, flat-topped, and pink or purple appearance. The exact cause is unknown; however, many researchers believe that is an autoimmune disease (the body attacks its own healthy cells).

Risk factors

The following are the risk factors:

  • Middle age
  • Women (higher chance than men)
  • Change of dental fillings
Symptoms

The following are the symptoms:

Skin

  • Sudden rash that lasts for months
  • Shiny, raised, pink, red or purple, flat-topped bumps
  • 3-5 millimeter papules
  • White streaked papules, called Wickham’s striae (not always)
  • Intense itching, especially at night

 

Oral

  • White streaks on the inside of cheeks. The lips, gums, and tongue may also be involved
  • Non-tender and non-painful streaks
  • Redness and blisters
  • Disturbed sense of taste, some may have a metallic taste
  • Dry mouth

 

Penis

  • Purple or white ring-shaped patches around the penis head
  • Usually not itchy
  • Symptoms similar to thrush
Diagnosis

The diagnosis is made when a doctor examines the patient physically, checks relevant symptoms such as blisters and inflamed patches, and performs certain lab tests, such as biopsy.

Management

Following is the management:

  • Regular use of prescribed medicines
  • Steroid creams
  • Corticosteroids
  • Avoidance of substances that trigger itching
