Muscle spasms
Description
The prolonged involuntary contraction of muscles due to abnormal nerve stimulation or abnormal muscle activity is known as muscle spasm. It is very common and can occur in any muscle of the body, but it is most common in hands, feet, abdomen, arms, thighs etc.
Causes
Causes muscle spasm include:
- Strenuous exercise,
- Dehydration,
- Stress,
- Anxiety,
- Fatigue,
- Muscle pain,
- Obesity,
- Narrowing of arteries,
- Diabetes etc.
Risk factors
Individuals who are at risk of getting muscle spasm are:
- Elderly
- Diabetic,
- Athletes,
- Obese,
- Hypertensive,
- Pregnant,
- Stroke,
- Anemic
- Patients with high cholesterol etc.
Symptoms
Common muscle spasm symptoms include:
- Pain,
- Tremor,
- Hard muscle
- Defective coordination etc.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is made usually by taking proper history and doing physical examinations. If necessary and the cause is still unknown after performing history and examination then electromyography (EMG), CT Scan, MRI, thyroid function test (TFT) and complete blood count (CBC) is performed.
Management
Try to prevent muscle spasms by stretching or hydrating yourself before performing strenuous exercise or any activity that requires exertion.
Usually muscle spasms settle down on their own, but individuals who experience severe pain following steps should be taken to ease the pain:
- Stretch and massage the spasmed muscle gently,
- Cool the sored area with the help of ice pack,
- Relax tightened muscle by warming it with the heating pad etc.
When to consult a doctor?
Usually it resolves on its own within a few minutes or hours. If you are experiencing frequent and persistent painful muscle spasms then consult a doctor.
