Pernicious anemia
Description
In this anemia, Vit B 12 is deficient. It’s mainly caused by an autoimmune process that makes the body unable to produce substances called intrinsic factors.
Causes
Our body requires a sufficient amount of Vitamin B12. Which is found in meat, shellfish, poultry, eggs, dairy products and nutritional supplements. Lack of Vitamin B12 in the diet leads to pernicious anemia.
Risk factors
- Having a family history
- Have had parts of your stomach or small intestine removed
- Certain diseases like Crohn’s disease, HIV etc
- Strict vegetarian
Symptoms
Common symptoms include:
- Weakness
- Fatigue
- Chest pain
- Headaches
- Pale skin
- Weight loss
Diagnosis
A few tests are required to diagnose pernicious anemia. Which include:
- Complete Blood count (CBC)
- IF and parietal cell antibodies
- Vitamin B12 level
Management
- Vitamin B12 injections
- Over the course of therapy, following the blood level of Vit B12
