Pruritus

Description

Pruritus is a skin condition characterized by severe itching and intense discomfort. It may occur on its own or present as a sign of other underlying skin diseases. Pruritus may involve only a single body part or the entire body. It is not fatal; however, it should be treated to limit the damage.

Causes

  • Exposure to allergens, such as pollen and insect bites

  • Irritating chemicals and cosmetics
  • Parasites, such as worms and scabies
  • Certain cancers or treatments

Symptoms

  • Scratch marks
  • Urge to violently scratch
  • Dry, cracked skin
  • Leathery, skin patches
Diagnosis

The diagnosis is made when a doctor examines the patient physically, checks relevant symptoms, and performs certain lab tests, such as blood tests.

 

Management

Following is the management:

  • Regular use of prescribed medicines
  • Application of cold compresses
  • Usage of moisturizers
  • Taking lukewarm baths
  • Avoiding scratching
  • Avoidance of skin irritants, such as furry clothes
