Ulcerative Colitis

Description

Ulcerative Bowel Disease, a type of inflammatory bowel disease, causes mild to severe inflammation and ulcers (sores) formation in the digestive tract. It mostly affects the large intestine (colon) and rectum. The symptoms often appear gradually, such as abdominal pain and discomfort.

Causes

The exact cause for ulcerative colitis is unknown; however, some aggravating factors include diet and stress.

Two possible explanations are an immune system malfunction and family history.

 

Risk factors

The following are the risk factors:

  • Weak immune system
  • Family history
  • Certain infections
Symptoms

The following are the symptoms:

  • Diarrhea, often accompanied by blood or pus
  • Abdominal pain and discomfort
  • Rectal pain
  • Urgency to defecate
  • Pain and difficulty during defecation
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Stunted growth in children
Diagnosis

The diagnosis is made when a doctor examines the patient physically, checks relevant symptoms, such as persistent diarrhea and abdominal pain, and performs certain lab tests, such as Blood tests and Stool tests.

Additional procedures include Colonoscopy (test to check the large intestine with a camera) and Flexible Sigmoidoscopy (examination of the rectum and sigmoid colon).

Management

Following is the management:

  • Regular use of prescribed medicine
  • Immunosuppressant drugs
  • Biologic agents
  • Antidiarrheal medications
  • Antispasmodics
  • Iron supplements
