Urinary Incontinence

Description

Urinary Incontinence, or involuntary urination, is an abnormality characterized by leakage of urine without conscious control.

Types:

Urinary Incontinence has the following types:

  • Stress Incontinence, occurs as a result of any form of exertion
  • Urge Incontinence, occurs due to an infection or injury
  • Overflow Incontinence, occurs due to an obstruction or blockage in the urine flow
  • Total Incontinence, involuntary urination problem since birth or after an injury
Causes

Following are the causes:

  1. Stress Incontinence:
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Hysterectomy (uterus surgery)
  • Obesity
  • Old Age

 

  1. Urge Incontinence
  • Cystitis, bladder infection
  • Neurological conditions, such as Prostate Enlargement and Multiple Sclerosis

 

  1. Overflow Incontinence
  • Tumor around or pressing against the bladder
  • Constipation
  • Urinary bladder surgery

 

  1. Total Incontinence
  • Defect since birth
  • Spinal injury
  • Fistula, connecting channel between the urinary bladder and a surrounding structure such as the vagina or rectum

 

  1. Other causes:
  • Medications
  • Alcohol
Risk factors

The following are the risk factors:

  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Pregnancy
  • Old age
  • Obesity
  • Tumor close to the urinary bladder
  • Surgeries of a close structure or involving the urinary bladder
Symptoms

The following are the symptoms:

  • Urine leakage during activities such as coughing, laughing, or sneezing
  • Having an urgent, strong need to urinate
  • Leakage of urine without any prior warning or urge
  • Wetting the bed during sleep or other activities
Diagnosis

To make a diagnosis, your doctor may examine you physically and ask you about your past health history, symptoms, frequency of urine leakage, fluid intake, and other relevant information.

Management

Following is the management:

  • Medicines
  • Urinary bladder training
  • Behavioral treatment
  • Pelvic floor exercises
  • Avoidance of caffeine and, possibly, alcohol
  • Usage of absorbent pads or adult diapers
