This medication is used to treat severe asthma, allergic conditions, rheumatoid arthritis (occurs when your immune system attacks the synovium — the lining of the membranes that surround your joints), collagen diseases (systemic autoimmune diseases (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis))

Contradications

This medication is contraindicated in patients with systemic fungal infections (a spectrum of yeast infections caused by different species (types)) unless specific anti-infective therapy is used. Head injury, stroke

Side effects

The patients taking this medication may experience menstrual problems, adrenal suppression (inadequate adrenal production of cortisol), growth suppression in children. Increased susceptibility to infections, increased severity of infections. Electrolyte disturbance, myopathy (muscle disease) osteoporosis, fractures, ocular disturbance, GI (stomach and intestine) disturbance, peptic ulcer 

Expert Advice

-Take oral form with or after meals. To prevent stomach upset, take with the meals

-Contact your healthcare provider if there is nervousness, sleep disturbances, sore throat, loss of skin color, excessive hair growth, change in vision, swelling of face/ankles/hands/ feet, difficulty in breathing, muscle weakness, change in color of stool, constant stomach pain, no improvement or worsening of the condition

-Avoid alcohol, limit intake of caffeine and stimulants during therapy

-If you have diabetes, keep your glucose level in check

-Do not get any vaccination done unless recommended by the  healthcare provider

-Avoid highly crowded place to prevent infection

-After intra-ocular administration, do not overuse joint
