This medicine is indicated in preventing & treating low blood levels of calcium in individuals who are unable to get enough calcium from their diet. Hence, this medication can be used to treat conditions caused by low calcium levels like osteoporosis (bone loss), osteomalacia/rickets (weak bones), hypoparathyroidism (reduced activity of parathyroid gland) & latent tetany (a muscle disease).

Contradications

It is contraindicated in conditions such as sarcoidosis, increased activity of parathyroid gland (hyperparathyroidism), increase calcium amount in blood (hypercalcemia), dehydration, constipation, kidney stones, tumor that dissolves bone, reduced kidney function. It is also contraindicated in individuals being allergic to calcium & calcium carbonate.

Side effects

Its side effects include constipation and upset stomach. More serious but unlikely to occur side effects include nausea/vomiting, loss of appetite, unusual weight loss, mental & mood changes, bone & muscle pain, weakness, increased thirst/ urination. Very serious allergic reactions are rare. But if symptoms of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing) occurs, ask for an immediate medical help.
