This medicine is used to treat erythromycin-sensitive infections (respiratory tract infections, skin infections, chlamydia infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, and syphilis).

Contradications

This medication is contraindicated in individuals with porphyria (Liver diseases negatively affecting skin and nervous system).

Side effects

Patients using this medicine may experience GI (stomach) upset, cholestatic jaundice (Jaundice caused by thickened bile or bile plugs in the small biliary passages of the liver), reversible hearing loss, allergic reactions, pancreatitis (inflammation of pancreas), cardiac effects, nervous system disorders hypotension, hallucinations, chest pain, fever, malaise, and C.difficile associated diarrhea.

  • Take this medicine with meals as it is better absorbed with food.
  • Contact prescriber if there is unusual nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, itching, easy bleeding, vaginal bleeding, vaginal discharge, blood in stool, dark colored urine, mouth sores, hearing changes, or if there is worsening of the condition.
  • Avoid alcohol during therapy and complete full course of antibiotic.

The patients with heart abnormalities, renal (kidney) or hepatic (liver) impairment, and Myasthenia gravis (muscular disorder) should use this medicine cautiously.
