fluvastatin

This medication is used along with other drugs to reduce total cholesterol and other fat based molecules inside the body. It is also used to slow down the progression of coronary atherosclerosis  (blockage in the blood vessels of the heart) in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia (increased cholesterol in blood)  as well as other coronary( blood vessels of the heart) diseases.

Contradications

This medication should not be used in patients with severe renal(kidney) impairment, active liver disease or impairment  as well as in other disorders .Females of child bearing age should also not be using this drug unless they are using contraceptives. Side effects

GI disturbances , sinusitis (inflammation of the sinus ) , hypoesthesia , UTIs (infections of the urinary tract) , insomnia (sleeplessness),  tooth disorders . Rarely abnormal liver function , myopathy(muscle disease) , headache , fatigue , dizziness , depression , memory loss , sexual dysfunction(problems while engaging in sexual activity) among many others. PRECAUTIONS

Patients with a history of alcoholism or liver disease should be cautioned. Liver function tests should be performed before and after treatment with this medication to make sure there is no serious adverse effect on the liver. Patients with renal(kidney) impairment , hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid ) , a history of muscle disorders, or hypotension (low blood pressure). INTERACTIONS
Some products that may interact with this drug include immunosuppressive drugs , nicotinic acid , erythromycin , rifampicin , cimetidine , ranitidine , gemfibrozil and other fibrates , cyclosporin substrates or inhibitors of CYP2C9 , glibenclamide , coumarin anticoagulants, phenytoin , colchicine , fluconazole , with or within seven days of system fusidic acid.
