This medication is used in the treatment of acute(short term) exacerbation of chronic(long term) bronchitis(infection of the main airways of lungs), acute(short term) bacterial sinusitis(infection that leads to inflammation of the sinuses), community acquired pneumonia(infection that leads to inflammation of the air sacs in lungs) when other antibiotics cannot be used or have failed, mild to moderate pelvic(lower part of the trunk of human body) inflammatory disease and complicated skin and skin structure infections that have responded to intravenous Moxifloxacin.

Contradications

This medication is contraindicated in patients that have a history of tendon(tissue that connects muscle to bone) disorders related to quinolone(antibiotic) treatment or suffer from congenital(present from the time of birth) or documented acquired QT prolongation(heart muscle takes longer than normal to recharge between beats), electrolyte disturbance(abnormality in the level of electrolytes), significant bradycardia(slow heart rate), heart failure and liver impairment.

Side effects

Patients administered with this medication may experience abdominal(stomach area) pain, headache, dizziness(feeling of being sleepy), gastrointestinal upset, QT prolongation(heart muscles take longer than normal to recharge between beats) in patients with hypokalemia(low potassium level), abnormal LFTs(liver function tests) and superinfections(patient infected with a virus gets co-infected with a different strain of the same virus).

Expert Advice

  • Take with or without meals, swallow whole tablet.
  • Take medication atleast 4 hours before or 8 hours after aluminum or magnesium containing antacids(medications that neutralize acid in stomach) or multivitamins containing iron or zinc.
  • If a dose is missed take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for the next dose.
  • Complete full course of therapy even if you feel better.
