rifaximin

This medicine is indicated in patients (above 12 years age) with diarrhoea. For reduction in risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy recurrence.

Contradications

This medicine is contraindicated in patients with diarrhoea complicated by fever or blood in the stoolor diarrhoea due to pathogens. 

Side effects

The side effects are as follows; bloating, gas, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, depression, headache, rash, muscle spasm, discoloration of urine and arthalgia (pain in the joint).

If you miss your dose, take it as soon as you remember. 

Discontinue use if side effects worsen.

This medication is used for treating diarrhea (traveler’s diarrhea). It can also be used to treat a brain problem associated with liver disease (hepatic encephalopathy).

Does this medication treat all types of diarrhea?

No, it only treats diarrhea caused by bacteia (E.coli). It will have no effect on blood diarrhea or diarrhea caused by virus.

How to store this medication?

Please store this medicine at room temperature (18-25 Celsius). Keep medicine away from excessive light, moisture, and children. Please do not flush medicines down the toilet. Please read the leaflet provided with the medicine for further storage guidance.

What else can I do to improve my condition?

Other than taking medicines, you can do the following to improve your condition: • Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration • Avoid caffeine and alcohol • Avoid drinks of extreme temperature • Avoid heavy meals for some time • Maintain good hygiene

The effects of this medicine in pregnant and lactating females are unknown. Consult your health care provider before use of this medicine.

Yes; do not get any vaccines while using this medicine as it may decrease effectiveness.

How to use Rifaximin?

This medicine is mostly taken through the mouth. Use as prescribed by your doctor. The dosage is dependent on the age, condition and its severity. This medicine is not recommended for children.
