Side effects
Rapid infusion of sodium chloride may cause cerebral (excess accumulation of water in the intra-and/or extracellular spaces of the brain), pulmonary (a condition caused by excess fluid in the lungs. This fluid collects in the numerous air sacs in the lungs, making it difficult to breathe) and peripheral edema (accumulation of fluid causing swelling in tissues, usually in the lower limbs). Congestive heart failure, electrolyte imbalance, and acidosis may also occur due to rapid infusion or increased volume of the infiltrate.
