trihexyphenidyl

This medication is used in the treatment of Parkinsonism (a combination of movement disorders) and drug-induced extra pyramidal reactions (symptoms that occur in people taking antipsychotic medications).

Contradications

This medication is contraindicated in patients suffering from intestine infection caused by shigella bacteria, diarrhoea (frequent watery stools) from an infection with clostridium difficile bacteria, thyrotoxicosis (excess thyroid hormone action), tardive dyskinesia (involuntary and repetitive body movements), involuntary movements of the face, myasthenia gravis (neuromuscular disorder leading to skeletal muscle weakness), high blood pressure, coronary (artery that supplies the heart) artery disease, chronic (long term) heart failure, low blood pressure, liver problems, decreased kidney function, closed angle glaucoma (eye condition that damages the optic nerve), and painful urination (passage of urine).

Side effects

Patients administered with this medication may experience anticholinergic effects (dry mouth, constipation, dilated pupils, urinary retention, blurred vision, increased heart rate), confusion, agitation (irritation), delusions (cannot differentiate between reality and imagination), and euphoria (excitement and feelings of well-being).

  • Take with meals. If you have dry mouth, take before meals and if you have nausea (feeling like vomiting) then take after meals.
  • Take at same time each day.
  • Do not chew or break extended release tablets.
  • Empty bladder before taking medication.
  • Avoid alcohol during therapy.
