Abdominal pain
Description
The region between the chest and pelvis is called abdomen which is commonly known as belly, pain in this region is defined as abdominal pain which is also known as belly ache, tummy ache, stomach ache. There are several types of abdominal pain depending upon the nature of the pain; it can be mild or severe, acute or chronic, continuous or non-continuous. It may be a sign of any infection, inflammation or disorder of abdominal organs.
Causes
Cause of abdominal pain depends upon the underlying condition, which includes the following:
- Constipation,
- Diarrhea,
- Gastro esophageal reflux disease,
- Crohn’s disease,
- Gallstones,
- Kidney stones,
- Cyst,
- Fibroids,
- Appendicitis,
- Cancer etc.
Risk factors
Risk factors of stomach disorders include:
- Age,
- Previous abdominal surgery,
- History of any bowel disorder etc.
Symptoms
Symptoms that may occur simultaneously with abdominal pain may include:
- Diarrhea,
- Gas,
- Flatulence,
- Constipation,
- Nausea,
- Vomit,
- Decreased appetite etc.
Diagnosis
Firstly, detailed history is taken by asking questions about the nature and duration of pain. Then physical examination of the abdomen is performed and to know the cause of abdominal pain several tests are performed such as MRI, ultrasound, X rays, colonoscopy and endoscopy.
Management
Management of abdominal pain depends upon the cause of abdominal pain. Following measures are taken for treating abdominal pain:
- OTC medicines: antacids, anti nausea, stool softeners etc.
- Antibiotics for inflammation of stomach,
- Home remedies; ginger tea for digestion, liquid diet, painkillers, heat compress for cramps etc.
When to consult a doctor?
Consult your doctor immediately if the pain is so severe that you are not even able to sit properly and you’re experiencing other symptoms such as bloody stools, vomiting, fever, swelling, and pain is continuous and has been occurring for more than 24 hours.
