Smooth muscle spasms

Description

Muscles that are found on the inner walls of hollow organs such as stomach, esophagus, blood vessels etcetera are smooth muscles. Prolonged, painful involuntary contraction of these muscles is known as smooth muscle spasm.

Causes

Causes of smooth muscle spasm include:

  • Dehydration,
  • Labour and childbirth,
  • Raynaud’s phenomenon (decreased blood flow to the ears)
  • Kidney stone,
  • Gallstone etc.
Risk factors

Risk factors of smooth muscle spasm include;

  • Elderly
  • Diabetic,
  • Anemic (lack of red blood cells),
  • Heart attack etc.
Symptoms

Symptoms of smooth muscle spasm include the following:

  • Sleep disturbances,
  • Loss of appetite,
  • Paresthesia,
  • Flu like symptoms etc.
Diagnosis

Diagnosis is made usually by taking proper history and doing physical examinations. If necessary and the cause is still unknown after performing history and examination then electromyography (EMG), CT Scan, MRI, thyroid function test (TFT) and complete blood count (CBC) is performed.

Management

Smooth muscle spasms are treated by:

  • Dicyclomine,
  • Hyoscyamine,
  • Mebeverine,
  • Peppermint oil etc.

Usually it resolves on its own within a few minutes or hours. If you are experiencing frequent and persistent painful muscle spasms or you experience sudden pain in chest or shortness of breath then consult a doctor immediately.
