This medicine is used to treat Megaloblastic (larger than normal red blood cells) and Macrocytic (abnormally large red blood cells) Anemia due to folic acid deficiency. It is also used as dietary supplementation in pregnant females to prevent neonatal neural tube defects.

Contradications

This medicine is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to folic acid, vitamin B drugs, Medicines containing folic acid. It should not be taken by individuals who have a disorder of iron metabolism, overload of iron in the blood, ulcer due to excessive stomach acid, excess iron , gastritis (inflammation of stomach cells) etc. 

Side effects

The patients using this medicine may experience abdominal cramps, diarrhea, rash, sleep disorders, irritability, confusion, behavior changes, gas, excitability, and seizures.

The dosage for adults is about 5mg for 4 months.

The dosage for children under 1 year is 0.5mg/kg/daily, over 1 year is the same as adult.
