Folic acid is used for preventing low blood levels of folate (folate deficiency) and high blood levels of homocysteine. People who are pregnant or might become pregnant take folic acid to prevent serious birth defects. Folic acid is also used for many other conditions including depression, stroke, the decline in memory and thinking skills, and many others.

Introduction

How To Use

  • Take this product by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily.
  • Take this product regularly to get the most benefit from it.
  • To help you remember, take it at the same time each day.
  • Follow the diet plan  recommended by your doctor or dietician
  • Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not increase your dose or take this product more often than directed.

  • Please consult your doctor before using any other medicines while using Folic acid. Some medicines such as Fosphenytoin, Methotrexate, Phenobarbital, and Primidone may interact with Folic acid function and absorption.

Primary Uses

Anemia and nutritional deficiency

Indications

This medicine is used to treat Megaloblastic (larger than normal red blood cells) and Macrocytic (abnormally large red blood cells) Anemia due to folic acid deficiency. It is also used as dietary supplementation in pregnant females to prevent neonatal neural tube defects.

Side Effects

The patients using this medicine may experience abdominal cramps, diarrhea, rash, sleep disorders, irritability, confusion, behavior changes, gas, excitability, and seizures.

The dosage for adults is about 5mg for 4 months.

The dosage for children under 1 year is 0.5mg/kg/daily, over 1 year is the same as adult.
