phenobarbitone

This medication is used as a sedative and an anticonvulsant (for treatment of fits).

Contradications

This medication is contraindicated in patients with severe respiratory depression (fluid build-up in lungs), porphyria (blood disorders). Severe renal (kidney) or hepatic(liver) impairment.

Side effects

A person using this may feel drowsiness, ataxia, allergic skin reactions, paradoxical excitement (causes excitement instead of drowsiness), irritability, hyperactivity and confusion, megaloblastic anemia (a type of anemia). Restlessness and confusion in elderly. Hyperkinesia (excessive restlessness) in children. Tolerance and dependence. Lethargy, nystagmus (uncontrolled movement of the eye), respiratory depression, hallucinations, memory and cognitive impairment (person has difficulty remembering), behavioral disturbances, depression.

INDICATION:

This medication is used in patients as sedative in patients with anxiety and insomnia and in patients with seizures.

 

CONTRAINDICATION:

This medication is contraindicated in patients with renal impairment (kidney failure), hepatic impairment (liver failure), porphyria (group of liver disorders) and  hypoventilation (Respiratory depression).

 

PRECAUTION:

Renal and hepatic impairment (kidney and liver failure), respiratory failure, risk of allergic reactions, vitamin D deficiency.

 

SIDE EFFECTS:

Hypersensitivity reaction/allergies, megaloblastic anemia (folic acid, b12 deficiency), lethargy (tiredness), depression, hepatitis, hypotension (low bp), thrombocytopenia (low platelet count).

 

PREGNANCY:

This medication is contraindicated in pregnancy.

 

LACTATION:

This medication is contraindicated. Consult your doctor before breast feeding.
