Headache
Description
Headache is pain in the head or face of different natures. There are two types of headaches: Primary and Secondary headaches. Primary headaches are not caused by other medical conditions while secondary headaches are caused by other medical conditions.
Common primary headaches include cluster headaches (severe burning or piercing pain around eye occurring in groups), tension headaches (mild to moderate pain), and migraine (recurring headache with sensitivity to light).
Causes
Common causes of headaches are:
- Family history.
- Triggers: Smoke, sharp smells, noise, stress, pollution, and allergens.
- Sinusitis: inflammation of sinus.
- Infections: headaches are commonly associated with throat and ear infections.
Risk factors
Following factors increase your risk of getting a headache:
- Insomnia
- Stress and depression
- Change in weather
- Alcohol abuse
- Triggers like noise, pollution, or sharp smells.
Symptoms
Headache refers to pain in head or face that may be gradual or sudden in onset, having variable intensity and duration, and can be throbbing, sharp, or dull.
Diagnosis
To reach a diagnosis, your doctor will take your complete medical history, and examine you. The doctor may perform some lab tests to rule out serious causes of headache.
Management
Management of headache depends upon the cause of headache. Mild headaches can be treated by pain relieving medicines while secondary headaches can be managed by treating the underlying causes. Preventive medicines can be used to avoid migraines. Alternative treatment includes meditation, and acupuncture.
When to consult a doctor?
Consult your doctor if you have persistent or worsening headache which doesn’t get better with medicines and if headache is triggered by coughing and exertion.
