OVERVIEW
WHAT IS THIS TEST USED FOR?
3gAllergy Specific IgE Universal Cockroach Lab Test is done to provide information if your body is allergic to Cockroaches. German Cockroaches are the most common type to which people are most allergic. The saliva, feces, and shedding body parts of cockroaches can trigger asthma and allergies.
WHAT DOES THE TEST MEASURES?
If your total IgE levels are higher than normal, it likely means you have some kind of allergy. But it does not reveal what you are allergic to. A specific IgE test will help identify your particular allergy. If your results indicate an allergy, your health care provider may refer you to an allergy specialist or recommend a treatment plan.
Your treatment plan will depend on the type and severity of your allergy. People at risk for anaphylactic shock, a severe allergic reaction that can cause death, need to take extra care to avoid the allergy-causing substance. They may need to carry an emergency epinephrine treatment with them at all times.
REFERENCE RANGE
They can range from 150 to 1,000 UI/ml, but the usually accepted upper limit is between 150 and 300 UI/ml
Q1. How is this test performed?
This test is performed on a blood sample. The blood is obtained from the vein and this is performed by a healthcare provider in the following way.
clean the skin
put an elastic band above the area
insert a needle into a vein (usually in the arm inside of the elbow or on the back of the hand)
pull the blood sample into a vial or syringe
take off the elastic band and remove the needle from the vein
Q2. Why get tested?
Cockroach allergy symptoms are almost similar to other allergies. Consult your doctor if you are
Coughing
Nasal congestion
Skin rash
Wheezing
Ear infection
Sinus infection
In many cases with cockroach allergens, these symptoms become chronic.
Q3. Are there any risks associated with it?
An IgE test is a safe procedure with minimal risks. Some kids might feel faint or lightheaded from the test. A few kids and teens have a strong fear of needles. If your child is anxious, talk with the doctor before the test about ways to make the procedure easier.
A small bruise or mild soreness around the blood test site is common and can last for a few days. Get medical care for your child if the discomfort gets worse or lasts longer
WHY GET TESTED?
Antibodies are made by the immune system to protect the body from bacteria, viruses, and allergens. IgE antibodies are normally found in small amounts in the blood, but higher amounts can be found when the body overreacts to allergens.
Allergen is any substance (antigen), most often eaten or inhaled, that is recognized by the immune system and causes an allergic reaction.
IgE antibodies are different depending on what they react to. An allergen-specific IgE test can show what the body is reacting to.
