Overview
What is Arthiritis Profile Test?
Arthiritis profile is a series of blood diagnostic tests, that help to diagnose rheumatoid arthiritis or other inflammatory conditions.
WHAT DOES THE TEST MEASURE?
Arthritis profile includes the following tests:
- Rheumatoid Factor: Is an antibody, detectable in the blood of adults with rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid factor test is used to help diagnose rheumatoid arthritis.
- C- Reactive protein (CRP): Is a blood test marker for inflammation in the body. C reactive protein is produced in the liver and the levels are tested in blood
- Uric Acid: High blood concentration of uric acid can lead to Gout, that causes painful joints.
- Calcium: Calcium deficiency occurs when calcium levels are low in blood, and long term deficiency can lead to osteoporosis which causes bones to become brittle
- Phosphorus: Phosphorus deficiency can cause bone diseases such as rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults
How is the test performed?
This test is performed on a blood sample. A syringe with a fine needle is used to withdraw blood from a blood vessel. The health care provider will tie an elastic band around the arm to make the blood vessels swell with blood. This makes it easier to withdraw blood. Patient is asked to tightly clench the fist. Once the veins are clearly visible, the area is cleaned with an antiseptic solution and then the needle is inserted into the blood vessel to collect the sample. Blood sample once collected will then be sent to the laboratory.
INTERPRETATION OF THE RESULT:
- Rheumatoid Factor: The normal range for rheumatoid factor is less than 15 IU/mL
- C- Reactive Protein: The normal range for C- reactive protein is 1.0mg/L
- Uric Acid: The normal range for uric acid is 2.6 - 7.0 mg/dl
- Calcium: The corrected total serum calcium concentration is normally 8.5 - 10.2 gm/dl
- Phosphorus: The normal range for phosphorus is 2.5 -4.5 mg/dl
WHY IS ARTHRITIS PROFILE TEST DONE?
Arthritis profile test helps to diagnose problems in joints and bones. This test is ordered
- If a person shows symptoms such as redness, inflammation, swelling, stiffness, and pain in joints.
- Family history of arthritis
- Overweight and old age are the two risk factors for arthritis
