What is this test?
- This laboratory test is performed on a blood sample to detect the presence of larvae of a certain parasitic nematode i.e. Filariae. Microfilariae are detected by microscopic examination of a blood sample.
Why is this test performed?
This test is performed to help in the diagnosis of the following conditions caused by microfilariae:
- Filariasis
- Elephantiasis
- Lymphangitis
- Lymphadenitis
- Tropical Eosinophilia.
- Why the sample for microfilariae detection should be collected at night?
The sample for microfilariae detection should be collected preferably between 12 to 2 Am because the microfilariae are active during the night.

- Wuchereria bancrofti
- Brugia malayi
- B timori
- Loa loa
- Mansonella perstans
- M ozzardi.
- How to prepare for this test?
No special preparations are required for this test. Inform your doctor about the use of all prescribed and non-prescribed medicine. Wear a short sleeved shirt to ease the sample collection.

- Fever
- Skin exfoliation
- Inguinal or axillary lymphadenopathy
- Testicular pain
- Limb swelling
- What are the risks of this test?
Collecting blood from a vein is a very easy procedure and pose only minimum risk, including:
- Bruising
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Lightheadedness
Interpretation of test results:
- Negative: No microfilariae are detected in the blood. The possibility of Filariasis can be ruled out.
- Positive: Microfilariae are detected in the blood, Filariasis is confirmed.
