OVERVIEW:
What is the CA-125 lab test?
A CA-125 lab test is a blood test that measures the level of CA-125 (cancer antigen 125) in the blood.
Why is the CA-125 lab test done?
A CA-125 lab test is done in order to:
- Monitor the treatment of ovarian cancer,
- Screen for ovarian cancer if you are at a high risk,
- Check for recurrence of cancer.
What does a CA-125 lab test measure?
A CA-125 lab test measures the amount of CA-125 (cancer antigen 125) present in the blood. Cancer antigen 125 is a protein that is present on the surface of most, but not all, ovarian cancer cells. An elevated level of CA-125 can be found in females that have ovarian cancer.
Are there any risks associated with this test?
There are no known risks associated with this test.
How should I prepare for this test?
This test does not require any special preparation.
What can cause a raised CA125 level?
Ovarian cancer, endometriosis (the tissue that normally lines the uterus starts growing outside of it), fibroids (abnormal growths in or on uterus), and pregnancy can elevate CA-125 level.
Is CA-125 always increased in ovarian cancer?
No, not all ovarian cancers are associated with an increased CA-125 level.
Can I get this test done during my menstrual cycle?
It is not recommended to get this test done during your menstrual cycle as menstruation also raises CA-125 level at certain times during the cycle.
Normal level of CA-125 is less than 46 U/mL.
