OVERVIEW:
What is the carbamazepine (Tegretol) lab test?
A carbamazepine (Tegretol) lab test is a blood test that measures the level of carbamazepine in the blood.
Why is the carbamazepine (Tegretol) lab test done?
A carbamazepine (Tegretol) lab test is done in order to:
- Detect the concentration of carbamazepine in the blood,
- Establish an appropriate dose,
- Maintain a therapeutic level of carbamazepine.
WHAT DOES THE TEST MEASURE?
This test measures the levels of carbamazepine in the blood. The therapeutic range for carbamazepine is about 4 to 12 mcg/mL (micrograms per milliliter). Levels above 15 mcg/mL are considered toxic. Ranges vary slightly from laboratory to laboratory.
What does a carbamazepine (Tegretol) lab test measure?
A carbamazepine (Tegretol) lab test measures the amount of carbamazepine circulating in the blood. Carbamazepine is a medicine that is prescribed to treat seizures (temporary abnormalities in muscle tone or movements), bipolar disorder, ease alcohol withdrawal, and to alleviate certain types of nerve pain.
Are there any risks associated with this test?
There are no known risks associated with this test.
How should I prepare for this test?
This test does not require any special preparation however, the timing of the sample collection should be discussed with the doctor.
What is the best time to get this test done?
Ideally, this test should be done at a time when the level of carbamazepine is expected to be at its lowest i.e., just before the next dose.
How frequently do I need to get this test done?
It depends on the condition of the patient and the cause for which he/she is taking carbamazepine.
Does smoking effect the level of carbamazepine in the blood?
Smoking has no significant effect on the level of carbamazepine.
The normal level of carbamazepine when it is taken by the patient himself is 4-12 mcg/mL.
Any value higher than 15 mcg/mL indicates toxicity.
