A double-J stent is a tube-like structure with curving ends that prevents the stent from slipping to into the kidney or bladder.
The DJ Stent for Bacterial C/S (Aerobic) Gram Stain Lab Test is a clinical test that checks for bacteria in the DJ Stent placed inside a patient due to any medical reason. The timely detection allows for early control of the bacteria that may cause mild or serious infections.
A sample of your urine may be taken for the test. Please consult your doctor for further information.
- What are the risks associated with this test?
There are no significant risks associated with this test. However, if you experience any severe reactions, please contact your doctor immediately.
- Is DJ stent removal painful?
Most patients who have undergone this procedure consider it to be fairly tolerable in terms of pain and discomfort. However, general anesthesia (temporary sleep and insensitivity to pain) is recommended.
- Can I get serious infections in my DJ stent?
While some bacterial infections are mild and reasonably treatable, others may be serious and require aggressive antibiotic therapy. Therefore, it is best that you discuss your condition with your doctor and follow all instructions and necessary precautions.
- Can I pass stool with the stent inside?
Passing stool and regular bowel movements are essential and sings of a good digestive tract. A normal bowel movement every other day is safe with a stent inside.
- How is a DJ stent inserted into the body?
A tiny camera is inserted into the urethra (tube allowing urine to pass from the bladder to the outside) and into the patient’s bladder. The inserted stent is then passed up the ureter and into the kidney. The procedure is fairly easy and takes about 10 to 20 minutes.
The results may be positive or negative, depending on the type of bacteria present.
Positive: Meaning that you have an infection and require treatment.
Negative: Meaning you do not have an infection.
Some bacterial infections are mild, whilst others are serious and can have dire consequences. Getting tested is essential for the following reasons:
- Helps you and your doctor diagnose various infections and predict the outcomes
- Regular check-up
- Diagnose conditions before they progress and prove to be fatal
- Plan treatment and evaluate the effectiveness of given therapy
