What is this test?
This laboratory test is performed to detect a fungal infection. It is performed on a sample collected from the infection-affected area. Fungal smear is also known as KOH smear.
Why is this test performed?
This test is performed:
- To detect fungal infections, including:
- Ringworm
- Jock itch
- Athlete’s foot
- Oral thrush
- Vaginal thrush.
- What is the role of KOH?
Sample is placed into KOH (potassium hydroxide) solution to kill all the cells except fungal cells.
- What are the symptoms of a fungal infection?
Following are the symptoms of a fungal infection:
- Thickened and brittle nails
- Red and itchy rashes
- Scaling of skin
- White patches in mouth
- Vaginal discharge
- What are the risks of this test?
Patients undergoing this procedure may experience mild pain and bleeding from the site but, it stops very soon. There is also an increased risk of infection.
- How is a fungal infection treated?
Fungal infection is usually treated by anti-fungal medicines including creams, pills, and lotions.
- Are fungal infections contagious?
Yes, some fungal infections may be contagious through skin contact and contact with contaminated surfaces.
Positive or negative
Interpretation of test results:
Positive: A positive result shows the presence of fungi. However, further testing may be required to identify the type of fungus.
Negative: Fungus is absent.
