What is this test?
- This laboratory test is performed on a blood sample to determine the reaction of body to 50 grams of glucose. It is helpful in detecting gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar during pregnancy, it is more common in the second and third trimester.
Why is this test performed?
This test is performed to screen and diagnose gestational diabetes. Most women with gestational diabetes deliver healthy babies but there is a high risk of developing diabetes type-II and obesity in the baby later in life if the gestational diabetes is not adequately controlled. There is also a chance of stillbirth with severe uncontrolled gestational diabetes.
- Do I need to fast for this test?
No, you don’t need to fast before consuming the 50 grams glucose for the test. You can eat and drink normally
- When should I get tested in pregnancy?
Your doctor will determine when you need this test. Usually, gestational diabetes starts in the middle of pregnancy (24-28th weeks).
- What are the risk factors for gestational diabetes?
- Obesity
- PCOS
- History of gestational diabetes
- Lack of physical activity
- Family history of gestational diabetes.
- Which tests are performed after an abnormal glucose challenge test result?
If you have an abnormal glucose challenge test result, your doctor may order:
- HbA1c
- 2 hour glucose tolerance test
- 3 hour glucose tolerance test
- Postprandial glucose test
- Urine glucose test.
Normal range: Less than 130-140 mg/dL
- Interpretation of test results:
Higher than the normal levels i.e. above 140 mg/dL may indicate gestational diabetes.
