What is this test?Hemosiderin urine is a laboratory test used to detect the presence of hemosiderin in urine. Hemosiderin is a breakdown product of hemoglobin and its presence in urine determines disorders related to red blood cell destruction.
Why is this test performed?
This test is performed:
- To diagnose hemolytic anemia
- To diagnose Incompatible blood transfusions
- If you have peripheral venous insufficiency.
- How much urine is required for the sample?
At least, 10ml of urine is required for the sample. Do not overfill the container.
- What is hemosiderin?
Hemosiderin is a protein that stores iron derived from the destruction of red blood cells and disturbed iron metabolism.
- How to prepare for this test?
- Do not empty your bladder (urinate) before the test
- Do not consume alcohol before the test
- Drink fluids to generate more urine.
- How to take the sample?
- Clean your hands and genitals
- Pour mid-stream urine in a sterile container
- Avoid contact of the container with genitals
- Wash your hands properly after collecting the sample.
- Is hemosiderin present in the urine, normally?
No, hemosiderin is not detected in urine of a healthy individual.
Reported as Positive or negative
- Interpretation of test results:
Positive: Presence of hemosiderin in urine indicating red cell destruction.
Negative: Hemosiderin not present in urine.
