OVERVIEW:
Nasal swab is a sample of the nasal secretions present at the back of the nose and throat. The sample can be used to detect various infections and diseases primarily affecting the respiratory passages.
The Nasal Swab for Bacterial Culture and Staining (Aerobic) Gram Stain Lab Test is a clinical test that checks for any bacteria that are present in the nasal secretions. The timely detection allows for early control of the bacteria that may cause mild or serious infections.
This test can be performed on males and females, and requires a nasal swab.
A sample of the nasal secretions is usually taken for the test with a fine medical tool. Please consult your doctor for further information.
- What are the risks associated with this test?
There are no significant risks associated with this test, except for mild redness, pain, and irritation at the tested site. However, if you experience any severe reactions, please contact your doctor immediately.
- Is the nasal swab procedure painful?
Most patients who have undergone this procedure consider it to be fairly tolerable in terms of pain and discomfort. However, if you experience any severe reactions, please contact your doctor immediately.
- Can corona virus/COVID-19 be detected from a nasal swab?
The most common method of detecting corona virus in a patient is the collection of a nasal swab. It is highly reliable and helps with the timely detection of the virus.
- Can I breathe or smell normally after getting tested?
Taking a nasal swab only causes temporary irritation and discomfort. After the collection, your breathing and smelling reflexes are fully functional.
- How do I prepare for the nasal swab collection?
There is no significant preparation for the nasal swab test. However, during the test, you may have to stop breathing through your nose for a few seconds. You may resume breathing normally after the test is done.
The results may be positive or negative, depending on the type of bacteria present.
Positive: Meaning that you have an infection and require treatment.
Negative: Meaning you do not have an infection.
Some bacterial infections are mild, whilst others are serious and can have dire consequences. Getting tested is essential for the following reasons:
- Helps you and your doctor diagnose various infections and predict the outcomes
- Regular check-up
- Diagnose conditions before they progress and prove to be fatal
- Plan treatment and evaluate effectiveness of given therapy
