OVERVIEW
WHAT IS PROTEIN TEST?
Protein fluid test is a Biochemical test for measuring the total amount of protein in serum. Protein in the serum is made up of Albumin and Globulin.
- Albumin makes up about 60% of the total protein, produced by the liver.
- Globulin makes up about 40% of the total protein
WHY IS PROTEIN TEST DONE?
- As part of a routine medical exam
- Unexpected weight loss or fatigue
- When an individual shows symptoms of liver or kidney disorders
WHAT DOES THE TEST MEASURE?
The protein fluid test measures the total amount of two classes of proteins in the blood, these are albumin and globulin.
Proteins are important parts of all cells and tissues of the body.
Albumin helps prevent fluid from leaking out of the vessels
Globulin plays an important role in immunity
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
How is this test performed?
This test is performed on a blood sample. The healthcare provider extracts the blood from the vein in the following way.
- clean the skin
- put an elastic band above the area
- insert a needle into a vein (usually in the arm inside of the elbow or on the back of the hand)
- pull the blood sample into a vial or syringe
- take off the elastic band and remove the needle from the vein
What are the risks associated with this test?
There is no significant risk associated with this test. A small bruise or mild soreness around the blood test site is common and can last for a few days. Get medical care if the discomfort gets worse or lasts longer.
Is there any preparation required before the test?
No preparation required before this test.
INTERPRETATION OF THE RESULT
The normal range of protein test is 6.0-8.3gm/dl or 60-80g/l
(Normal value ranges may vary slightly among different laboratories. Talk to your provider about the meaning of your specific test results)
- Low protein levels suggest liver disease, kidney disease or a disorder in which protein is not digested or absorbed properly.
- High protein levels suggest dehydration or some type of cancer that can lead to abnormal accumulation of protein.
